Do Black Women Have A Safe Place In the Aesthetic World?

Let's talk about black women and our space in the aesthetic world. As a beauty professional it saddens me the stigma we as black women face. I know we all have this long-held belief that "Black Doesn't Crack". Which is true to a certain extent. Our melanin does protect us from environmental factors more than our lighter counterparts but this does not mean we can neglect our skin and not protect it. We are sometimes not educated properly on the best treatments and products for our skin. We also face societal pressures that make us feel like we will be betraying our cultural identity if we get these procedures done.

Finding a provider that specializes in your skin tone and is willing to guide you and provide a treatment plan will be helpful in reducing this stigma. All treatments and products are not made the same and there are certain treatments that are not made for our skin. Examples include certain laser treatments, high percentage chemical peels without pre and post-care, certain sunscreens, etc. We have to be careful what providers we let treat our skin so we don't run into complications.

You should be able to feel safe and educated when receiving aesthetic treatments. Whether it is botox, filler, peels, lasers, or facials. Just know that improving yourself is amazing and it doesn't make you less BLACK. From your favorite Aesthetic Nurse.
